Mendelssohn Violin Concerto & Bruckner 7
The Belgian National Orchestra invites the Orchestra National de Lyon
In this exchange concert, the Orchestre National de Lyon, under the baton of its chief conductor Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, performs not only Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto but also Bruckner's Seventh Symphony. The adagio, which begins with a lament dominated by violas and Wagner tubas, is an ode to Richard Wagner. The latter was in poor health when Bruckner started composing the adagio, and died when the movement was halfway through. Some musicologists believe that the cymbals and triangle—which have only one bar to play in this movement and do not appear in the rest of the symphony—symbolize the moment when Bruckner heard the news of Wagner's death. The premiere of the Seventh Symphony in December 1884 marked Bruckner's first major professional success.
