The discussion about contemporary Europe is often limited to economic and social arguments, explains cultural sociologist Pascal Gielen in his new book No culture, no Europe. Gielen highlights the problems which the European Union has been wrestling with since the financial crisis of 2008. Achieving solidarity between the Member States is no mean feat. On the occasion of the presentation of his new book, Pascal Gielen speaks with Karl van den Broeck (BOZAR AGORA), the Hungarian author György Konrád and Julie Ward, Member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament and Member of the Committee on Culture and Education. They discuss culture: the important, missing element in the public debate about Europe.

The publication of the book “No culture, no Europe” was supported by the European Cultural Foundation (ECF). The same day at BOZAR, the 2015 ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture will be given to the Athens Biennale (Athens, Greece) and the Visual Culture Research Center (Kiev, Ukraine). The award ceremony will be preceded by a debate with the laureates at 2.30 p.m. in the room Terarken. The entrance is free but obligatory. Please contact pma@culturalfoundation.eu.
