Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre: Composer & Virtuoso
The most famous French composer of the 17th century, Élisabeth Jacquet De la Guerre, was also an exceptional harpsichordist. As a child, she played in front of the Sun King, who encouraged her to "cultivate this wonderful talent". The excellent French quartet Nevermind immerses you in the work of this composer by creating a dialogue between her trio sonatas and harpsichord pieces and the work of her contemporaries, François Couperin, Elisabeth's cousin and great name in harpsichord literature, and Michel de la Barre, a very popular traverso player at court. This association emphasizes the openness to the world of De la Guerre, which imbued its music with Italian influences, thus opposing the traditionalist current advocated by some of its peers.
