The young Franco-Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović, a couple of seasons ago still a Rising Star, has an aura of the devil’s violinist Niccolò Paganini. His energetic approach means he’s the right man for Béla Bartók’s technically demanding Rhapsodies. These are inspired by Romanian folk melodies, but as usual he changed them to suit his needs. In spite of the illogical numbering Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony is chronologically his last one. In four seamlessly interconnected movements he gives musical expression to his impressions of the Scottish landscape. Between times we hear Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsodies, romantic works full of ethnic timbres in the style of Liszt and Dvorák.
