The versatile Belgian cellist Marie Hallynck performs just as often with orchestras as she does with chamber music. Now she is turning her hand to Tchaikovsky’s extremely difficult Rococo Variations, a series of variations on an original melody that he wrote himself. She performs the expressive Minstrel Song by her compatriot Glazunov. Works by both composers complete the programme. In his Fourth Symphony Tchaikovsky attempted to paint a picture of people who are fighting against fate. The result is overwhelming, because the power and intensity of the Fourth surpass everything which had been heard before on a symphonic level in Russia. In The spring, full of warm orchestral colours, Glazunov portrays the burgeoning spring.
