The Ninth Symphony is Anton Bruckner’s swansong. When he passed away at 72 years of age, he had been working on the composition for as long as ten years. Of the four planned movements he was able to complete three, and the final one reaches us in an advanced draft version. With this work Bruckner made the musical transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. He continued to build on the legacy of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and let all the innovations from Stravinski, Bartók and the Second Viennese School (Schönberg, Berg, Webern) shine through. The Dane Michael Schønwandt, head conductor of the Opéra Orchestre National de Montpellier, will be conducting this concert as part of the Klarafestival.
