‘Merope’

Merope interweaves the kanklės – a traditional Lithuanian stringed instrument – with the voice, guitar, synths and electronics to create a modern sound. The three musicians combine traditional music, ambient and indie in unique ways, resulting in restrained, atmospheric music and a soundscape that is both local and universal. Merope is no stranger to Bozar. In collaboration with the Vilnius chamber music choir Jauna Muzika, the trio has already offered us an unforgettable evening. Now they have invited the highly sought multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily and the drummer, improviser and composer Toma Gouband to join them. “Merope stretches where traditionalists narrow.” Along with the mighty Ismaily and Toma, Merope pushes back the limits of the kanklės further than ever.
