Matilde Coral is a real flamenco icon. You only need to hear that she was the great filmmaker Carlos Saura’s choreographer and principal dancer on two occasions (in Flamenco and Sevillanas) to really appreciate her importance on the Seville artistic scene. Director Paco Ortiz has devoted a magnificent documentary to her, poetically entitled Matilde Coral - Acariciando el aire (Matilde Coral – Caressing the air). The last big name from the prestigious Seville school hasn’t usurped its reputation. In the film moving archive images show that she devoted her life to her passion and was the embodiment of flamenco for countless audiences throughout the world. Not content with dancing the flamenco with unrivalled grace, she codified it, taught it and passed it down to several generations, in her famous Triana Academy. Don’t miss this touching portrait of this grand dame of 81 years of age. An absolute must for flamenco fans!
