In order to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the birth of the great composer Sergei Prokofiev in a fitting manner, we have invited an orchestra and conductor who perfectly embody the Russian soul. Valery Gergiev will be conducting “his” Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra as it interprets the master’s Sixth Symphony, the tragic tone of which meant that the Soviet Regime classified it amongst the “abnormal, repugnant and pathological” works. We will also be treated to extracts from the famous ballet Romeo and Juliette, where Prokofiev’s talents as a melodist reach their peak. The evening will open with Mozart’s magnificent Concerto for clarinet.
Concerto for orchestra No. 1, op. 26, "Naughty Limericks"
