Blind Love
Magdalena Kožená can sing anything. The mezzo-soprano proves it yet again by bringing Monteverdi's The Combat of Tancredi and Clorinda to life. This work, premiered during the 1624 Venice Carnival, is included in the pre-Baroque composer's collection of Madrigals of War and Love. With stage directions for the narrator - here played by the excellent mezzo-soprano - it marks a step forward in the theatricalisation of the madrigal and is therefore avant-garde, as are the other richly inventive vocal works that join it in this programme, such as the formidable Sequenza III by Luciano Berio, and Arianna has a Problem, based on Monteverdi's Lamento d'Arianna, which the Czech composer Marko Ivanović dedicated to his compatriot in 2016.
