European Gala

The London Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the world's most celebrated orchestras. In this gala, it performs a programme with a clear theme: all three works have a religious basis and all three were written in the 20th century. The most recent is by Sofia Gubaidulina, one of Russia's leading contemporary composers. In her music, Gubaidulina often makes use of unusual, contrasting instruments such as the Russian accordion known as the bayan. In Sieben Worte, the instrument contributes to the work's grim mood.
