The piano quartet repertoire – for piano and strings – is not as extensive as that for piano trio. Brahms, however, made a major contribution to it in three contrasting masterpieces, ranging from the explosive final movement, à la hongroise, of the first quartet to the deeply nostalgic slow movement of the third. In the hands of the three outstanding musicians who join forces this evening, Brahms's music is sure to both dazzle and move its listeners.
