A Fancy: English theatre music from the end of the 17th century

Music was a must in the fashionable theatre of late 17th-century London. In plays it served mainly as entertainment, but it played a much more important role, closely linked to dramatic development, in semi-operas or masques. This concert offers an opportunity to discover the music written for the stage by masters such as Matthew Locke, Giovanni Battista Draghi, John Blow, and Henry Purcell. It is presented by Bertrand Cuiller and Le Caravansérail in the spirit of the "broken consort" – a small ensemble made up of instruments of different families, popular at this time.
