Daniel Harding - Pierre-Laurent Aimard

Dvořák’s Piano Concerto, written 140 years ago was to have a strange destiny. Critics felt the piano part was ineffective. In an effort to mitigate this, the pianist and pedagogue Vilém Kurz rewrote the solo part, asserting the piano’s presence more and altering the original work in the process. The outstanding French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard has chosen to perform the original composition however, with the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam. The orchestra, led by Daniel Harding, will also perform Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle. It is a work that questions our instinctive motivation and the source of all innovation. This one-act opera is more than a musical masterpiece. It is an excellent example of early-twentieth-century Hungarian opera and much like Debussy’s Pelléas and Mélisande in France, it opened the door to a new style of opera.
