When Hagar’s Song, Jason Moran and Charles Lloyd’s duo album, came out in 2013, Lloyd was almost 75 years old and yet the online jazz magazine All About Jazz claimed the saxophonist had never sounded so good. The collaboration with pianist Jason Moran clearly has potential, and looks likely to develop into a long-lasting relationship. Lloyd has a special bond with pianists, who he is particularly good at selecting: after many years working with Keith Jarrett at the end of the 1980s he began a new collaboration with the Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson. In 2007 Jason Moran joined Lloyd’s New Quartet, following in the footsteps of these legendary pianists. Lloyd and Moran have completely different backgrounds but, according to the JazzTimes, they share “an unfailing ability to gauge the emotional essence of a number”.
