Beethoven, Sonatas II
At barely 30 years of age, the German pianist Levit is getting his teeth into a monument of literature for solo piano: all of Beethoven’s sonatas. This is a particularly ambitious challenge, all the more so seeing as this is uncharted territory for him, but certainly not beyond the talents of this Beethoven aficionado. Indeed, his first recording, which was devoted to the German master’s last five sonatas, earned him numerous awards, including an ECHO Klassik, adding to this exceptional musician’s already impressive list of awards. Yet, getting to work on 32 Beethoven sonatas remains a bold exercise and particularly demanding because they highlight the multiple facets of the brilliant composer’s musical and spiritual personality which truly revolutionised musical history. We have given Igor Levit two whole seasons to make them his own whilst recreating all their wealth and beauty.
