In the presence of the Director

Quentin is only 27 and has been in a coma for the past ten years. His mother brings him to the Coma Science Group in Liège (BE) to let doctors examine whether or not there still is a chance of improvement. During this one week, Prof Steven Laureys and
his team run various tests and Quentin’s mother never leaves his side. Filmed in stunning cinemascope, the film trails the conversations between friends and relatives, in the emptiness of a single hospital room. The camera allows an invisible world to float
past where everything is still breathing: memories of the past, disappointed hopes for the future and an implacable fate in life. I Know You Are There is an ode to the love of a mother for her child and the dilemmas she faces.

Thom M Vander Beken (1977) works as an independent documentary filmmaker. In 2008 he created ‘Lost in Transition’ in collaboration with national television Canvas.
