Hespèrion XXI

Jordi Savall, director

With The Routes of Slavery (1444-1888), Jordi Savall and his Hespèrion XXI Ensemble concentrate on one of the most harrowing episodes of Humanity. The exploitation of humans, their treatment as commodities, the humiliation and suffering generated by a segregationist policy which lasted several centuries are highlighted by an exceptional historical reconstitution. The work brings together the musical traditions of Mali, and oral traditions of the descendants of the slaves of Madagascar, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. Beyond recognising this human tragedy, Jordi Savall’s initiative also looks into celebrating a musical reconciliation promoted by UNESCO by demonstrating the wealth of the music and dance produced by this memory and by highlighting its inexhaustible source of inspiration for everyone and the foundations of equality and reciprocity.
