‘Haydn: The Seasons’

27 Feb.'16
- 20:00

Brussels Choral Society

Joseph Haydn composed The Seasons (Die Jahreszeiten) towards the end of his musical career, following the great success of his earlier oratorio The Creation (Die Schöpfung). First performed in Vienna in 1801, The Seasons is scored for a large classical orchestra, four part chorus and three solo singers representing archetypal country folk: Simon (bass), Lucas (tenor), and Hanne (soprano).

Baron Gottfried van Swieten provided the libretto for The Seasons, as he had for The Creation, and it is based on an epic poem by the English author James Thomson. The work begins with Spring and moves through the year, depicting elements of country life such the weather and climate, sunrise, bird-song, hunting, harvesting and so on.

The Brussels Choral Society and Ensemble Orchestral de Bruxelles invite you to explore one of Joseph Haydn’s greatest masterpieces.
