In the presence of Baltasar Garzón, Julian Assange's attorney, and director Clara Lopéz Rubio

In the presence of the director Clara Lopéz Rubio and Baltasar Garzón (lawyer for Julian Assange)

In the war for the future of the Internet, the protection of personal data and freedom of expression, two men are engaged in a fierce struggle: Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, who is facing extradition to the United States, and former Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón. In case of extradition, Assange could face life imprisonment, or worse, the death penalty. With unique access to the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where Assange took refuge since 2012, the film bears witness to the years of work of these extraordinary men and their fight for freedom.

By defending the founder of WikiLeaks, Garzón seeks to prevent the Western world from moving away from its fundamental values of freedom of expression and access to information; the WikiLeaks revelations show that our governments take numerous measures to control citizen opinion. Garzón has also carried out many investigations into repressive policies that violate human rights and democratic values, such as terrorism, or state crimes committed by dictatorships in South America.

The screening will be followed by a debate around the following questions: How does the Assange case test our democracies? What is the significance of the information revealed by WikiLeaks? What have we done to defend the man who revealed the hidden face of our political regimes? What can the United Nations or the European Parliament do to defend his rights? What is the fate of ‘whistle-blower’ journalists?

With director Clara López Rubio, Baltasar Garzón, Julian Assange's lawyer and legal defence coordinator, Stefania Maurizi, investigative journalist for La Repubblica and author of ‘Dossier WikiLeaks: Segreti Italiani’, and Marie Aréna, President of the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights and Claude Moraes, Member of the European Parliament for the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.
