Both biographical and artistic, the documentary traces back his sources of inspiration, trials and sufferings, while also offering an insight into his major paintings, explained by the artist himself. Based on the artist’s obsession with Judaism and his desire to study the Bible and the Talmud, the film follows five major paths that have shaped his personal quest: the path of the son, evoking his endless conflict with his anti-Semitic father; the path of the patient, where he reveals how his psychiatric internments have shaped his identity; the path of the painter, seen in his studio; the path of the student, which shows his relationship with philosopher and rabbi Marc-Alain Ouaknin; and finally, the path of wisdom, a position he reached at his current age. Featuring interviews with the artist and his close relatives, his wife Elizabeth and his friends, such as designer Philippe Starck, the film takes you on an enlightening tour around the life and work of one of the most fascinating figures of the French cultural scene.
