Fidelio (1805 version)

Fidelio, Beethoven's famous and only opera is an ode to love, freedom and loyalty. Based on the play Léonore ou l'amour conjugal by the French writer Jean-Nicolas Bouilly, Beethoven's time-consuming composition gave rise to several versions between 1804 and 1814. The conductor René Jacobs and the Freiburger Barockorchester are performing the 1805 version this evening, returning to the composer's true inspiration when the work was originally created.
