Feurat was born in France to Iraqi parents. He felt a void while growing up – he lacked family and roots. Feurat is bound to Iraq as he is bound to his father Amir, a political opponent who fled the dictatorship; his quiet and melancholic hero.
Feurat became a journalist and lived in Iraq for several years to cover the conflict, before returning to France, exhausted. From the war against Kuwait to the American invasion that paved the way to jihadism, the very notion of Iraqi nationhood was lost, as the country was repeatedly destroyed.

Le parfum d’Iraq (Flavours of Iraq) is his testimony, a desperate quest for a lost country, and the story of a legacy. The story unfolds amidst Feurat’s memories, told through his family and his encounters, while retracing the great events that have marked Iraq in the past 40 years. In the end, he does not come to terms with Iraq, but with his father. Their imaginary Iraq exists somewhere in between.
