In the presence of Charlemagne Palestine.
Mainly known today for his large minimalist sculptures made of sheet metal, Richard Serra plays in both Boomerang (1974) and Match Match Their Courage (1974) with the possibilities of video as an artistic medium. Created together with Charlemagne Palestine and land artist Nancy Holt, Match Match Their Courage documents their reaction when hearing their own voice (and each other’s) looped back to them through headphones with a slight delay.
Based on sounds and images recorded at a Charlemagne Palestine performance, Charlemagne 2: Piltzer (2002) is « at once a diary film, a document of the concert, a structural flicker film, a hand-processed film, a graphic representation of music, and an attempt to apply cognitive principles in sensation and perception to film art. » (Pip Chodorov)
