Jennifer Baichwal "Edward Burtynsky. Manufactured Landscapes" (2007)
The Canadian filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal pays homage to the work of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky as he travels through China recording the damaging effects of pollution and industrialisation on natural landscapes. Winner of the Best Canadian Film award at the Toronto Festival, this documentary is both a work of art and a reflection on industrialisation, changing landscapes and the human condition. As Burtynsky explains: "Nature transformed by industry is a dominant theme in my work. These images are metaphors for the dilemma of our modern existence; they attempt to establish a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. For me, these images act as mirrors of our age."
