On 3 May 2015, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, BOZAR organizes the very first Difference Day, together with The Brussels Platform for Journalism, a joint initiative involving Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Erasmushogeschool Brussel (EHB), the Evens Foundation and iMinds. The recent, dramatic attacks on freedom of expression in Paris, Copenhagen and Dhaka have demonstrated how urgent this initiative is. International and European journalism is central to this and is highlighted in relation to press freedom and freedom of expression. Freedom of expression also implies respect for the opinion of others and the recognition of diversity. This is why we like to refer to World Press Freedom Day as Difference Day.
Difference Day begins with an opening speech by Julia Cagé (author of Sauvez les médias) followed by four debates on investigative journalism, the dangers of journalistic work, cartoons and Europe in the press and the Oscar winning documentary Citizenfour on Edward Snowden. You are free to look around the exhibitions Cartoonists for peace and Devoir de Regard by Amnesty International at any point during the day. Four prizes will be awarded during the evening session, at the end of which the VUB and ULB will grant the honorary title of Freedom of Expression to Raif Badawi, the blogger who is currently imprisoned in Saudi Arabia.
