‘The Demon’

In 1871, the legendary pianist Anton Rubinstein composed The Demon, one of his most compelling works. In this opera he paints the portrait of a fascinating but restless spirit which gets bored with causing mischief on earth. The Georgian princess Tamara offers some consolation: she is the only one who doesn’t see him as a demon, but rather as a tormented soul. While this opera has lost none of its popularity in Russia, in the West it is only now being rediscovered. This production has been left in the capable hands of Mikhail Tatarnikov, a conductor with a real theatrical soul.
