‘Creative writing workshop’

“To be truly visionary we have to root our imagination in our concrete reality while simultaneously imagining possibilities beyond our reality.” – Bell Hooks

What would the future look like beyond oppressing structures, binary systems and limiting ways of self-expression and identification?

Black to the Future is an invitation to imagine and dream utopias and multiverses, a space between now and tomorrow where creative ways are used to claim black futures. After an introduction into Afrofuturism and its influence on culture, arts and politics, the workshop will tap into the potentials of Black imagination through the heritage of ancestors like Octavia Butler, drawing from present imageries of pop culture and taking an outlook at beautiful black futures. What if we question our current reality and think of new ways of being? In this 90-minute interactive workshop-lecture format we will take a look at those questions through writing tools and imaginative practice. The writing meeting offers a safe space to explore Afrofuturism, no prior experience required, the workshop will be held in English.

Before the workshop, join the guided tour of the exhibition Quiet Refusal with curator Sofia Dati at Beursschouwburg.

Adyam Tesfamariam (she/they) is from Eritrea and based in Berlin. Having organised workshops at several community spaces – AfroPolitan Berlin, Each One Teach One – and appeared at festivals such as Re:publica and Fluctoplasma and as part of the series Elbphilharmonie Explains, her work organizes around liberating potentials through Afrofuturism, writing, somatics and club culture.
