CONTEXT:

22.30 Meet the Artist: Philippe Herreweghe.

The B minor Mass is one of the most intriguing and ambitious compositions in Bach's oeuvre – and, indeed, in the whole of Western music. Bach was over sixty when he wrote the Hohe Messe. It is not entirely clear why he decided to set a complete mass to music at that age. The result, in any case, is both a model of craftsmanship and a spiritual milestone.
