‘Collegium Vocale Gent’

Drawing inspiration from both the Russian legacy and the Second Viennese School, Schnittke's works are invariably highly condensed and his Choir Concerto is no exception. This wonderful piece of religious intensity conjures up the music of the Orthodox church, based on the Book of Lamentations by the 10th century Armenian writer Grigor Narekatsi. Ligeti's Lux Aeterna, a 20th century mystical masterpiece, is also underpinned by a metaphysical force that Kubrick immortalised in his film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
