Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice
The tragic love story of Orpheus and Euridyce inspired countless composers right from the very beginning of opera: Peri, Caccini and, of course, Monteverdi with his masterful L’Orfeo. Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice is another milestone in music history. The composer resolutely went for a simplification of both the action and the music, thus exposing Orpheus' pain all the more. This unfortunate one descends into the underworld, looks back and sees his beloved disappear. An intervention by the love god Amore provides a lieto fine - a happy ending: both lovers find each other again above ground. The peerless Cecilia Bartoli returns to Bozar and performs the role of Orfeo in unforgettable fashion. Who could interpret the mythical progenitor of music better than this great voice?
