ANOTHER INDEX OF METAL

Kobe van Cauwenberghe

Guitarist Kobe Van Cauwenberghe brings back to life these classic experimental studio-albums by Brian Eno and Robert Fripp, using the original “frippertronics” set-up of two reel-to-reel tape-recorders. An Index of Metals is a 28 minute track that takes up the entire B-side of Fripp and Eno’s second studio album Evening Star from 1975 in which they continue their experiments from their first album No Pussyfooting (1972), using two reel-to-reel tape recorders as a primitive looping system in combination with Fripp’s guitar playing (aka “frippertronics”). Evening Star has an overall more smooth sound than No Pussyfooting, leaning further towards Eno’s later ambient albums. On the B-side track An Index of Metals they take frippertronics to another level, or as critic Ted Mills wrote in a review at the time: “An Index of Metals, keeps Evening Star from being a purely background listen as the loops this time contain a series of guitar distortions layered to the nth degree, frippertronics as pure dissonance.”

Due to his early death, composer Fausto Romitelli (1963-2004) never achieved the wider recognition his work deserves. He wrote An Index of Metals for the Belgian contemporary music ensemble Ictus. It turned out to be his final composition. Impossible to pinpoint, Index delves into a large spectrum of influences, where Pansonic, Pink Floyd, death metal and spectacular vocal achievements cohabit, creating a larger-than-life trance opera. This audio-visual show mixes various approaches, combining pop, psychedelic rock, electronics and various film screens with visuals created by Fausto Pachini.
