Leuven and Timbuktu are university towns, places for the development of knowledge and culture, gardians of the “Memory of the World”. The exhibition brings together books from the Leuven Library which were damaged in 1914, when the library itself was destroyed during the First World War, and manuscripts from Timbuktu which were exhibited in BOZAR at the start of the year. An act of solidarity expressed by the venerable Leuven institution with regard to the Malians, who saved numerous manuscripts that the Islamists wanted to burn in the library of the Ahmed Baba Institute in Timbuktu.
