In this film made in 1966, a milestone in African cinema history, Senegalese writer-filmmaker Ousmane Sembene (1923-2007) explores the complex dynamism of the post-colonial era through the story of Diouana, a young Senegalese girl who is employed as a maidservant by a French family in Dakar and taken with them to Antibes. Without income or recognition, Diouana eventually kills herself, grown desperate with the gap between the life she has been leading in France and her old dreams of a beautiful world. The Black Girl, Sembene’s first feature-length film, questions cultural dominance, modern slavery and the living conditions of women, struggles which would be recurrent themes in all his films. This rarely shown masterpiece was screened at the latest Cannes Film Festival in a new print which was restored by the Cineteca di Bologna and The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project, which was initiated by Martin Scorsese for the preservation of important but neglected masterpieces from film history.
