Daphnis et Chloé
After some highlights from the ballet Bacchus et Ariane by French composer Albert Roussel, the young American star pianist George Li takes on Franz Liszt's First Piano Concerto: a finger-breaking challenge full of cascading octaves, intricate embellishments, and lightning-fast arpeggios.
Maurice Ravel's greatest orchestral work is the ballet Daphnis et Chloé, commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes. Choreographer Michel Fokine crafted the ballet scenario based on the pastoral romance of the same name by the Greek writer Longus. Ravel delivered a colourful, orchestrally refined score drawing inspiration from 18th-century French landscape painting.
