Mozart Violin Concerto 4 & Moussorgski 'Pictures at an Exhibition'
First guest conductor Roberto González-Monjas began his career as a solo violinist, concertmaster and chamber musician. In this concert, he performs – as violinist and musical director – Mozart's Fourth Violin Concerto, written by the Austrian composer in 1776 while in the service of the Salzburg archbishops. Pictures at an Exhibition is Mussorgsky's most famous work. The occasion for writing this cycle was an exhibition of works by the Russian painter and architect Viktor Hartmann, a close friend of Mussorgsky's who had died suddenly. Ten sketches served Mussorgsky as inspiration for as many compositions. He interspersed them with 'promenades': short compositions that depict how the composer walks from one work to the next.
