Goran Bregović, who is mainly known for his film soundtracks (The Time of the Gypsies, Arizona Dream, Queen Margot, Underground…), is a composer in his own right. His famous Wedding & Funeral Orchestra, which has already conquered the world, will be performing at Balkan Trafik, for an evening dedicated to the musician’s new work, Three Letters from Sarajevo. The piece, for which Bregović’s orchestra will be joined by the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, revisits powerful symbols of the Bosnian capital, marked by the peaceful cohabitation of three monotheistic religions and the horrorsthe horrors of the Yugoslav Wars. Originally written for solo violin, the composition expresses the splendour of the meeting of cultures that characterises Sarajevo and the curse which has regularly struck the city since 1914. Four Serbian musicians, Aleksandar Sedlar, Mirjana Nešković, Zied Zouari and Gershon Leizerson, are responsible for the arrangement for orchestra. The solo part of the three letters, each representing a monotheistic religion, will be interpreted by a solo violinist who hails from different cultural traditions.
