‘Aniconism’

Against the Image

“Aniconism” is the name given to the ban on the depiction of God in certain monotheist religions. How can we link this ancestral tradition, which is based on the idea that only God has the power to create, with the notion of representation in modern and contemporary art?

Several participants will attempt to answer this question: curator Hicham Khalidi will set the ball rolling with an inaugural conference. This will be followed by a discussion between the Turkish artist Cevdet Erek, Silvia Naef (Arabic Studies Section of the University of Geneva), and the audience, led by the Young Friends of Turkey association.
