Love and Loss

When you love, it’s sometimes necessary to let go. Although there is no guarantee of a painless goodbye. In this melancholic recital, countertenor Alexander Chance follows a straight line from English Orpheus John Dowland to baroque hero Henry Purcell. In between, he selects contemporaries and compatriots, songwriters with the lute as an extension of their feelings, as the cheek on which tears roll down. Thomas Campion, Thomas Ford and John Danyel composed short, poetic songs around 1600 and published them in major songbooks. Chance, named ‘One to Watch’ by Gramophone, is accompanied by Toby Carr on lute and theorbo.
