Focus on South Africa
Ashley Kriel, a young activist and key figure of the anti-apartheid liberation struggle, was killed by the police at the age of 20, thus becoming a symbol of South African resistance. Known as the “Cape Flats Che Guevara”, after the disadvantaged suburb of Cape Town, Kriel organised protest demonstrations in his school from the age of 13 onwards. His numerous actions and strong commitment contributed to revolutionising the young working class.
Nadine Cloete (Khoi-San) is a young filmmaker based in Cape Town. She is passionate about producing films that focus on heritage and identity. Jitsvinger: Maak it Aan (Make it Happen) was her Honours film for the University of Cape Town. Action Kommandant won the festival’s audience award for Best South African Film and was presented in several international film festivals, such as Visions du Réel (Nyon), the Seattle International Film Festival, Black Star Film Festival (Philadelphia), and many more.
