In the Footsteps of Lisa Christiani
With her expressive playing and boundless passion, Sol Gabetta and a group of friends explore the mysterious life of Lisa Christiani. As the first professional female concert cellist, Christiani broke several taboos in the 19th century – when playing a cello was seen as improper for women – and inspired composers such as Mendelssohn to embrace the solo potential of the instrument. She only lived to the age of 26, but her virtuosity laid the foundations for later masterpieces by Saint-Saëns, Lalo en Tchaikovsky. Gabetta’s quest to follow in Christiani’s footsteps is supported by a documentary and album release. History, innovation and emotion go hand in hand.
