Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring
The Belgian National Orchestra celebrates the arrival of spring with Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring under the baton of Dutch conductor Bas Wiegers. A veritable pinnacle of musical modernism, this work opens with a suave melody for the solo bassoon, in an unusually high register, and ends with a frankly barbaric tutti! The programme also includes an orchestral work by Wim Henderickx, the composer at the centre of the Belgian National Orchestra's season. In Sanskrit, tejas means fire, light, vitality, magical power and creative energy. This term gives its title to a composition for large orchestra in seven parts by Henderickx. Musical influences and instruments from all over the world – including a great deal of percussion! – can be found in this work, subtitled "What does the sound of the universe look like?”.
