The 20th edition of the Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition (2024) was won by Ukrainian Dmytro Udovychenko. Last year, he convinced the jury with his inspiring interpretation of Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto. On 16 April, he will once again enchant the Henry Le Boeuf Hall in a recital with pianist Roman Lopatynskyi. The programme features Shostakovich as well; this time his Sonata for violin and piano, his only one for the prima donna among strings. Ravel and Janáček also confined themselves to just one sonata for violin and piano. In his last chamber music work, Ravel gives in to his soft spot for American music: in the movement Blues, it briefly seems as if we are listening to a banjo and saxophone! A triptych by contemporary Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovych completes the bill.
